Plumbers NI web

Building a trusted heating brand for a market that runs on oil, not gas

The challenge

Plumbers NI is a network, not a plumbing company. It connects Northern Ireland homeowners with vetted Gas Safe and OFTEC registered installers. That creates a hard brand problem: earn the trust of a trading business while being straight with people that the brand itself is not the one turning up at the door. Most trade marketing solves this by blurring it. We would not.

The solution

Brand positioning built around the network model rather than around it, a content architecture that leads with oil heating because Northern Ireland does, and openly published fixed-fee pricing in a trade that traditionally hides behind 'call for a quote'.

Challenges and opportunities

Plumbers NI is not a plumbing company, and pretending otherwise was never an option.

It is a network. Homeowners come to it with a broken boiler or a bathroom project, and it connects them to vetted installers, each Gas Safe or OFTEC registered in their own name. The commercial model is sound. The brand problem is genuinely difficult: a homeowner about to spend four figures wants to know exactly who is coming to their house and who carries the liability. An introducer brand has to answer that honestly and still feel like a safe pair of hands.

The lazy version of this brand writes “we” everywhere, implies a fleet of vans, and hopes nobody asks. That works until the first complaint, and it poisons the trust it was built on.

Positioning

We built the positioning on the network rather than around it. Every piece of copy on the site distinguishes between the brand and the installers: “installers on our network repair boilers in…”, not “we repair boilers in…”. Registration is always attributed to the individual installer, because that is where it legally sits.

That constraint turned out to be an asset. Being explicit about vetting, registration and who holds what qualification is more reassuring than a vague “fully qualified team”, and it gave the brand something concrete to talk about that a single-van operator cannot claim: a standard applied across many installers rather than one person’s word.

The oil insight

Almost all UK heating content is written for gas, because almost all of the UK runs on gas. Northern Ireland does not.

NISRA’s Continuous Household Survey puts 61% of Northern Ireland households on oil central heating, against 36% on gas. In the rest of the UK, oil is a rounding error. That single fact meant the entire content architecture had to be inverted relative to any GB template: oil boiler servicing as a first-class service rather than an afterthought, OFTEC given equal weight to Gas Safe, and brand coverage for Warmflow, Grant, Firebird and Worcester Heatslave, names that barely register in British heating content and are household terms here.

The same logic drove the guide programme. Thirty long-form guides were written to answer the questions Northern Ireland homeowners actually have, including the grant landscape, which is entirely devolved and where most nationally published advice is simply wrong for this market. When research showed several widely cited schemes had closed or never applied here, the guides were corrected to say so plainly rather than repeat the received wisdom. Accuracy is a slower way to build a content library and a much more durable one.

Pricing in the open

Trades traditionally hide price. The site publishes it: fixed-fee servicing, itemised what-is-included lists, and a landlord compliance plan that bundles the gas safety certificate with the annual service at a stated price rather than quoting each element separately.

For the landlord audience in particular, this reframed the offer. Compliance is an annual administrative burden with legal consequences attached, and a fixed-price bundle with a clean paper trail is a materially different product from a plumber who will “sort you out”.

Where it stands

The site is live and the content programme is ongoing, currently running around 100 pages across services, guides, locations and boiler brands.

The honest position on performance is that this is an authority build in its early stages. Organic visibility for a new brand in a trade where the search results are dominated by established local businesses with years of reviews and citations behind them is a multi-year job, not a launch metric, and the current programme is focused on the informational territory where a young domain can realistically compete rather than the local-intent terms where it cannot yet. We would rather say that than quote a flattering number.
